The Boating Industry Association Ltd (BIA) is calling on all levels of Australian government to provide strategic support for the nation's marine manufacturing and recreational boating sector.
The association warns that a critical skills shortage is threatening the industry's substantial economic potential.

Recent data from the BIA highlights the recreational marine sector as a major contributor to the national economy and a leading recreational pastime, with millions of Australians participating in boating activities annually. The industry generates over $10.2 billion in annual direct turnover and employs more than 35,000 people across the nation.

Despite these impressive figures, the BIA's National Recreational Boating Statement 2025 identifies a significant skills shortage across key trades, including boatbuilders, shipwrights, marine mechanic technicians, and trimmers. This shortage poses a risk to the industry's growth and sustainability.

Andrew Fielding, CEO of BIA, emphasized the need for government investment in trade pathways, apprenticeships, and retention programs to address the skills gap. He stated that without targeted support, the manufacturing capability could stall, jeopardizing jobs and economic activity that support exports and communities across the country.

The BIA is advocating for governments to recognize the marine sector as a key component of Australia's manufacturing base and Blue Economy. The association calls for investment in trade training to reduce industry skill shortages and infrastructure to support safe and convenient access for all ages and abilities.

For individuals interested in the marine industry, particularly those considering careers in boat manufacturing or related trades, this call to action highlights the potential for growth and opportunity within the sector. Addressing the skills shortage could lead to increased job availability and a more robust industry.

In conclusion, the BIA's appeal for government support underscores the importance of strategic investment in Australia's marine manufacturing sector. By addressing the critical skills shortage, the industry can continue to thrive and contribute significantly to the national economy.
